BBC News - Games Industry Investment (response commentary)
The UK's video game industry is a significant contributor to the global success of AAA games, hosting branches of major studios such as Rockstar, EA Games, and Activision, to name just a few. Despite this, the UK's video game industry has faced considerable challenges in recent years, as covered in this short segment by the BBC.
Several factors have negatively impacted the industry, including the insufficient post-Covid-19 recovery plan, Brexit, the economic recession induced by poor economic leadership, rising cost of living, the crash of the housing market, unstoppable inflation, and conservative policies towards the creative sector. Fun times. Fun times.
These challenges have made it difficult for UK studios, talent, developers, and service contributors to access project opportunities and investment, let alone to sustain their presence in the sector. While this is true for the gaming industry, it also applies to other sectors of the entertainment industry, including film and high-end TV (HETV), which are now addressing the challenges of labor access post-US strikes.
As a new government has been recently elected, we can only hope the Prime Minister and Ministers will address these challenges by developing sustainable policies that attract and retain sector investments, help support the development of a new workforce, and promote the video game industry as a core pillar of modern British culture.
